My Vaccination Discovery
One day, just before my scheduled c-section I was poking around on the What to Expect When You're Expecting forums. I was an active member of my DDC (due date club). I had formed bonds with many of the women on their over the ups and downs of pregnancy. This particular day, I came a across a thread that no one had commented on yet. I would always look for those threads, because I hated for someone to put themselves out there only to get no response! So, I clicked and read the thread, it went something like this, "My friends pedi just told her that formaldehyde is in her baby's vaccine." What? I immediately thought that this woman was a crack pot. She must be crazy to believe that a pediatrician would inject a baby with that nasty crap we use to embalm dead people with. So, I wrote back that I would find out and let her know. I popped over to the CDC website and started searching for vaccine ingredient lists. I wont say they are easy to find. It took me several hours to get the information I was looking for. But sure enough, plain as day, "formaldehyde."
I was shocked and thought that there must be a legitimate reason for this toxic chemical to be in a vaccine for a newborn. I started looking for studies involving formaldehyde. I checked the FDA website and the EPA website. I found that they too considered no amount safe for human consumption. Then I started looking for vaccine trials to see if there were any long term effects of injecting formaldehyde into newborns. But I couldn't find a single vaccine trial that lasted more than 12 weeks. What was this toxin doing in children's vaccines? I posted back to the women letting her know what I had found. Thinking, naively that every mom would be so happy that we had discovered this. I was vehemently attacked. The things that were said to me hurt me so deeply, I had to leave the forums altogether. I decided I would put the issue on the back burner, finishing getting ready for the arrival of my new baby, and nurse my hurt feelings from the bizarre treatment I had received by my fellow mommies. Why weren't they happy to know what was in the vaccines they were about to inject into their kids?
Just a few weeks later, it was time for my daughter's 6 week appointment. It was the appointment where she was supposed to be receiving her first round of vaccinations. I still had the issue simmering on the back burner. I was spending more and more time reading about each vaccine and looking up adverse reactions on the VAERS database. I decided to let our pedi know that I wasn't ready to make a decision yet as to whether or not my daughter would be receiving the vaccines. I just wasn't convinced the benefits in any way outweighed the risks. I let the nurse know upon arrival that we wouldn't be doing any vaccinations today. She got this blank look on her face and started to back out of the room, "I'll just get the doctor."
Dr. R entered. She had been my own pediatrician. In fact, I had gone to that practice since I was in the 2nd grade. She began to start her why vaccines of paramount importance speech and I cut in, “look Dr. R, I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m simply not finished researching the subject and my daughter will not be receiving anything until I have reviewed the data myself.” At this point, the conversation went completely out of control. Dr. R’s face became red and she started to yell, “I’m not asking you to do anything I wouldn’t do for my own children.” “No offense, doctor, but I couldn’t care less what you do with your children. Charlotte is my child and she wont be getting vaccinated today.”
“I just saw a baby die last week of meningitis,” she was now screaming. She was unaware that I had reviewed the statistics for deaths of meningitis in Maryland and there had been only one death in the entire state each year for as far back as I could find. “I see. Are you sure about that, Dr. R? Because there is one death per year in Maryland. Its February, are you suggesting you happened to have the ONE case that will likely occur this year in Maryland just last week? What do you think the odds are that you’re telling me the truth?” She avoided the question and immediately launched into threatening me.
“I will call child protective services. They will remove that child from you. You are denying her life saving treatment by not vaccinating.” Dr. R was now screaming and crying hysterically. I was so shocked by her behavior I remained completely calm. Had I known what kind of fight I was in for, I surely would have lost it much sooner. “Dr. R, I have an attorney and I am well aware of my rights, how dare you threaten me.” “If you don’t vaccinate the baby on schedule, then you can never return to the practice again,” she yelled at me.
“That’s perfectly fine, after your behavior, there’s no way I would,” I replied. The nurse returned and tried to force me to sign some paper work. I told her I’d have my attorney look over it and if it was important, then I would fax it to them. All the while, I could hear Dr. R in her office with all the other doctors working that day. She was screaming and crying.
What was I missing? I was starting to feel like vaccination was more of a religion then a medical decision.
"The Vaccine Issue" will go through the same process that I went through.
